Are you due a Fuel Excise Tax refund?

The current economic situation is stressful for many businesses. We want to make sure that our clients are receiving all the refunds to which they are entitled, to ease the pressure as much as possible.

If you have off-road vehicles, plant or equipment that you fill with petrol, there’s good news: the excise tax paid at the pump can be claimed back! Up to 76 cents per litre can be claimed back on petrol used off road within your business. 

What is excise duty? 

The tax on petrol, called “Fuel Excise Duty”, is a user charge which contributes to our roading infrastructure costs in New Zealand. Some of the tax includes ACC charges. So if you use petrol for commercial use, but not on the road, then you will be able to claim back the tax each quarter. Diesel fuel does not have excise duty. Instead, the Road User Charges on diesel vehicles contributes to the infrastructure funding—and there is no ability to claim this back.

Are you entitled to a refund?

You’re entitled to a refund of the excise duty and the goods and services tax (GST) charged on petrol, CNG, or LPG used:

  • in an exempted vehicle
  • in a road user charges-licensed vehicle
  • in a commercial vessel
  • for search and rescue purposes in a dedicated rescue vessel
  • for commercial purposes other than as a fuel in any motor vehicle, vessel, or aircraft.

Claiming a refund

There are two ways to do this. You can: 

1) Go to the NZTA website and DIY it. Applications are made quarterly, but can be backdated 2 years which results in a 10% penalty. Copies of invoices to show proof of purchase are required, along with a summary of the vehicles which use the fuel.

2) Use a registered excise tax agency that works directly with businesses to process claims. One of the standout companies we have dealt with is Catalyst Fuel Refunds! To date, Catalyst has processed over 80 million litres worth of petrol refunds through NZTA. They charge no registration fees and offer a no refund, no fee guarantee—meaning you only pay if you receive a refund.

Processing a refund like this is relatively simple, but it’s another task on the to-do list that many business owners don’t get around to. We want to make sure you’re not one of them!
